Visions of Gerard was written at the kitchen table of my sister’s home in Big Easonburg Woods, North Carolina, over a ten-night stretch, midnight to dawn, ending with refreshing visits to the piney barrens out behind the cotton field at sunrise.

I did no rewriting or revising whatever, except for name changes and one important comma finally inserted somewhere, where I’d made a spontaneous mistake about it being needed, although I did reject a whole night’s writing and started all over again on the section the next night.

It was all written by hand, in pencil, in little notebooks. Certain kinds of stories seem to deny the rackety typewriter. [6]
